If you are keen to learn more about how a Walking School Bus works and/or you are keen to set up a walking school bus in your area, please join representatives from Auckland Transport in the staffroom on Tuesday 5th November at 2.30pm for more information. If you are unable to make the meeting but would still like more information please contact our go-to parent - Sarah Delaney sarah@avenuehair.co.nz or our Travelwise lead-teacher, Ms. Hedstrom annah@redbeach.school.nz

Halloween-themed Wheels Day

IMG20241031105524.jpg

It was amazing to see all the children with their decorated wheels last Thursday. They had a blast scootering, biking and skating around the court. Well done everyone! Thank you to our Travelwise leaders who helped lead & organise this fun event.

Pasifika Language Weeks

Well done to Amelia Hazelman and Locky Hipa who have hosted a Pacific Language Week.

Amelia inspired us by teaching a ‘word of the day’ in Fijian as well as sharing many beautiful crafts and sulu from her culture.

Locky with the support of family, celebrated Niuean Language Week by hosting a workshop making kahoa lole or lolly necklaces. The children who attended learned about occasions when you might gift kahoa and the tradition of giving your first one away.

TEAM NEWS - JUNIOR SCHOOL

The Year 0 and 1 children have been participating in touch rugby every Wednesday for the last 3 weeks.  It was run by Sarah from Kelly Sports who was encouraging and energetic with our tamariki setting them up for success.  Through fun games and group skills the children learnt different running elements such as dodging, scoring tries, restarting after a tag and defending.  We then had a fun game where they put their new skills to the test in a friendly match.

Room 30

In Room 30 the children have used the ‘Technology Design Process’ to help different Fairy Tale characters solve their problems. For the Three Little Pigs the children designed a house that could withstand the effects of different wind speeds and for the Three Billy Goats Gruff the children had to design a boat/raft to help the Billy Goats cross the stream. For Little Red Riding Hood they had to create a basket to take to Grandma and for Goldilocks they created a ‘just right’ bed. The children did a great job at reflecting on their design and making relevant changes when necessary.

Room 2

The children were introduced to the engaging and educational Blue Bots, interactive robots that allow for basic programming using directional buttons. This activity aimed to spark an interest in coding and technology while promoting teamwork and critical thinking. By working in groups, students created their own code pathways, enhancing their understanding of how coding functions in everyday life and its relationship to mathematics. The hands-on experience not only captivated the students but also laid a foundation for future learning in coding and problem-solving.

Room 12

We have been busy learning about electricity and circuits.

First we looked at static electricity by rubbing a balloon against our hair to build up a static charge. Then we investigated to find what materials we could attract to our balloon like tissue paper and our own hair!

Then we had fun trying to make a circuit using two wires, a battery, and a bulb. We made a connection between circuit and circle because electricity needs to flow in a circle without breaks to make the 'load' (in our case a light bulb) work. Next, we are going to predict and test different materials in our circuits to find out if they are insulators or conductors, e.g. whether electricity can flow through them or not. Lots of awesome hands-on fun!

Room 13

Over the first three weeks of the term, Room 13 have had three touch/rippa rugby sessions run by Kelly Sports. The skills taught over these three sessions included running, dodging, scoring tries, restarting after a touch/tag, taking rippa tags and touching/tagging. The children practised these skills through a range of drills and games, including some rugby variations on tag and ultimate rippa. Overall, Room 13 developed not only their physical skills but also teamwork, coordination, and confidence through each engaging session.

Year 3/4 MIDDLE SCHOOL

In Year 3 and 4 we have been learning to follow the technology process to plan, create, test and evaluate a design that helps solve a specific problem.

On our visit to the zoo last term we learnt about what enrichment is and how the zoo uses enrichment to keep their animals happy, healthy and to promote natural behaviours in their enclosures they would normally display in the wild. We used this learning to put our creativity to the test.

The children were challenged to create synthetic Kōwhai flowers to be placed around the garden to invite Tui into our garden and encourage them to display natural behaviours while our young Kōwhai tree is still growing.

The children learnt to work collaboratively, discuss ideas, critically think about their design and evaluate the effectiveness of their material choices.  It was great to listen to the discussions where they were debating, negotiating and compromising during the design process.

The children excitedly reflected on their failures and success and were super proud of their flowers.

Year ⅚ SENIOR SCHOOL

Whangaparāoa Mathex

13 of our Year 5/6 students represented RBS at Whangaparāoa College on Friday. They all worked well as teams and competed admirably with one team finishing 4th in a field of 16. Thanks to Greg and Neicia for providing transport too.

Algebra

The year 5/6 students have enjoyed hands-on learning this term as we unpack algebra at this level. Classes have created growing patterns with two or more variables and are challenged to find the rule. A lot of fun was had in Rooms 17 & 18 making these pyramids and unpacking the algebra expressions to predict the next size pyramid.

Athletics

Our team has been learning the skills of Shot Put, Discus, Long Jump, High Jump, and Sprints in preparation for our Team Athletics Day, to be held on Wednesday the 6th of November. Students have shown perseverance and determination to give each sport their best. We eagerly await the chance to put our skills to the test next week.

MOTUORA TEAM

On Friday 25 October Motuora went to Wainui School for their agricultural day. It was fantastic! There was lots to do. We browsed market stalls selling plants, jewellery and arts and crafts. There were games to play, like duck fishing and throwing a ball at cans. We got to enjoy yummy food, such as candy floss, sausage sizzle  and popcorn. There were even lots of farm animals to pat. The lambs, calves and ponies were so cute. Everyone managed themselves really well considering it was crowded and loud. It was a long day and everyone was very tired but happy by the end of it. What a great day out!

A FRIENDLY REMINDER

Please don't park in our Staff Carpark.  We need these parks to be available for staff. We have many itinerate and special needs staff who come and go throughout the day transporting resources and sometimes students.
If you need to collect an unwell child, you are most welcome to come down close to the office for pick up.
Thank you for your understanding.
