International Students 2024

This term Red Beach School welcomed a group of International students from China. These students learnt alongside their peers in the classrooms and participated in a ’kiwi experience’’ programme. This programme involved learning Te Rakau Sticks and Poi movement, making pavlovas, trying fish and chips, creating clay Pounamu and completing a kiwi scavenger hunt.  We all enjoyed having the opportunity to make friends and engage with new people in our school community.

Kapa Haka

On Friday the 13th of September, Kapa Haka performed at the Tu Maia festival alongside other schools from our area. The group have worked hard and put in a lot of practise to pull of a fantastic performance. They showed their RICH Hearts all day and for many, enjoyed participating in a new cultural experience.

Te Wiki o te Reo Maori

This week we celebrate Maori Language Week. Across the school we are learning to ask and answer questions around the theme of food. Tomorrow, classes will participate in Traditional Maori Games run by Kelly Sports.
Keep an eye out on HERO as we share our learning with you throughout the week.

Year 0-2 JUNIOR SCHOOL

The week was full of daily activities/competitions, as well as guest speakers reading books to the class. There was much excitement with daily quizzes, and notices announcing spot prizes. To finish the week each class decorated doors/windows, got dressed up in character and joined a parade to celebrate. Although the rain was a dampener, the sun returned and tamariki got to admire all the hard mahi that went into decorating. What a wonderful way to get tamariki inspired and enthusiastic about reading.
The rain was a good reminder of why we are fundraising - for an all weather cover over the courts! All in all, a very successful and fun filled week.

Room 4 celebrated The Lighthouse Keeper - By Ronda Armitage and, David Armitage which has been a firm favourite of the class at The Discovery Hub. Favourite characters were painted on our celebration window along with a basket full of mustard sandwiches!

Room 5's focus book for Book Week was 'Aliens Love Underpants' which the children thoroughly loved. We designed our own underpants, wrote about aliens, learned how to draw an alien and read many of the other stories in the 'Underpants' series. We had such a fun week!

We had Sally Sutton visit Room 3 and 11 on Tuesday, she has been writing picture books, children's novels and plays for two decades. She has also been awarded several Storylines Notable Book Awards for her work, and in 2009 she and illustrator Brian Lovelock won the Picture Book category of the New Zealand Post Book Awards for Children and Young Adults for Roadworks. The children were familiar with a lot of her books and The Cat From Muzzle is a favourite for Room 11.  Micah was lucky enough to dress up in Road Workers gear although it took a while to find the appropriate clothing which Room 11 and Room 3 found extremely funny.

Looking forward to next year's Book Week already!

Room 12

The children in Room 12 had a great time celebrating Book Week. Book logs were filled in and Bingo boards were completed. We read lots of books from the Hairy Maclary series by Lynley Dodd and had great fun drawing our own versions of Hairy Maclary. We thought our pictures looked amazing and they are now part of our door display. . To top it all off we came second in the fundraising competition so we are all looking forward to a pizza lunch.

Room 30

The children in Room 30 loved doing a ‘deep dive’ into Julia Donaldson’s books. We loved doing door displays for The Gruffalo as well as The Smeds & the Smoos. It was also great to see the children dressed as their favourite book character. Thank you to the parents who supported this fun event and well done for the great fundraising efforts.

Room 2

For Book Week room 2 focussed on books on Elmer the Patchwork Elephant written by David McKee. Elmer talks about how “Everyone is unique and we should embrace our differences”, furthermore the books promote inclusivity and friendship. Thanks very much parents for supporting your child in their choice of character, they all looked amazing - we even had an ‘Elmer’.

Room 13

For Book Week in Room 13, our class text was Giraffes Can’t Dance by Giles Andreae. The children did some lovely giraffe art for our door, and we learned about the author’s purpose for this text. The children came up with some lovely ideas, such as “Persevere” and “Don’t let others tell you what you can’t do.” We also had lots of fun participating in the daily reading challenges and filling out our bingo boards. It was so lovely to finish the week off seeing everyone’s book character costumes.

Year 3/4 MIDDLE SCHOOL

On Thursday, September 5th, Year 3/4 had an amazing day at the Auckland Zoo! Our visit was a fantastic extension of our Term 2 and Term 3 focus on animal evolution, food chains, and habitats. We had a blast designing our own habitats in the zoo classroom and were thrilled to see the adorable baby chimpanzee and tiger cub. It was an unforgettable experience that brought our learning to life!

Year ⅚ SENIOR SCHOOL

Speeches:

This term in Year ⅚ we have focused on persuasive writing and speech writing. Tamariki have worked really hard and it was wonderful to see everyone challenging themselves, getting involved within their class competition, supporting their classmates, and enjoying the wide range of speeches presented.

Last week, we were thrilled to hold our annual Year ⅚ speech competition with the top two speakers from each class.  Students had the chance to showcase their creativity, public speaking skills, and confidence in front of their peers, teachers, and parents.  Whether they spoke passionately about a topic or aimed to persuade the audience on an important issue, the event celebrated the unique voices of our students.

Well done to our top speech winners:

Year 5: Connor Ashforth, Amelie Cummings, Chloe Currie

Year 6: Daisy-Mae O’Brien, Sydney Schiltknecht, Maddison Findlay

Motuora

In Motuora we want our students to grow into confident and capable members of society, which is why we prioritise learning life-skills as well as academics. This term our students have had turns going to the local supermarket once a week to purchase ingredients needed for our cooking session the following day. Students have learned how to use signs to locate items, converse with supermarket staff as appropriate, identify which item has the best value for money, and pay for the items at the checkout, as well as how to conduct themselves appropriately in public. We have been blow away by how well this has gone this term and are excited to continue into Term 4!

A FRIENDLY REMINDER

Please don't park in our Staff Carpark.  We need these parks to be available for staff. We have many itinerate and special needs staff who come and go throughout the day transporting resources and sometimes students.
If you need to collect an unwell child, you are most welcome to come down close to the office for pick up.
Thank you for your understanding.
