LATEST NEWS AND ACTIVITIES FROM OUR TEAMS
During Week 5, RBS opened Samoan Language Week with a Celebration Assembly. There was a joyful vibe throughout the school as students experienced a taste of Samoan Culture. Our Pasifika Group performed and shared about Samoa. The celebration of the Samoan Language continued in classrooms and lunchtime workshops. A huge fa’afetai lava to the Trafford family for their time and support in teaching us dances and donating lavalava to our school. A special thanks also, to Sarah O’Malley for her awesome sewing skills.

Matariki celebrations TONIGHT
Come out tonight at 5 - 6:30 to Celebrate Matariki with us. All whanau are welcome to come along to share soup and listen to stories and performances of Matariki. Remember to bring a mug for your soup.
Jumping June
Our Jumping June charity fundraiser for the Heart Foundation has been a huge success so far! Throughout the month, students have participated in various skipping activities, all aimed at promoting fitness and raising funds for a great cause. The enthusiasm is contagious as everyone has been jumping during their class fitness time and for many tamariki, in their own time at lunch and home too! Thanks to the generous donations and spirited participation, we have so far raised $8,000 (at time of writing) for the Heart Foundation. Jumping June has not only helped Red Beach School support a worthy cause but also highlighted the importance of staying active and healthy.
You’ve done a sterling job this term and you’ll be back ‘on duty’ in Term 4. Next term we will welcome back our Term 1 Road Patrollers. Ms. Hedstrom will meet with you all next week.
Kapa Haka
On Friday the 21st of June, 8 students were selected to participate in ‘Te Kotahitanga Day’ at Silverdale School. This is an opportunity to be immersed in Te Ao Maori through powhiri and workshops, as well as fostering whanaungatanga amongst local schools. This term's focus was learning the legend and the game of Ki-o-Rahi. Our students represented our school well and are excited at the prospect of an interschool Ki-o-Rahi competition.
Following our day out, we visited Pinehaven Cottage to perform as a part of their Matariki celebrations. The students performed well and were grateful for the opportunity to practice with an audience before our own Matariki event.
Mathex
Wednesday, June 19 saw 16 students represent RBS at the NorthCross Interschool Mathex competition. It is always an adrenaline filled event as our 4 teams of 4 students competed against 55 other teams from across North Shore and Rodney.
All the teams competed with focus and RICH hearts. This was exemplified by Vibhav Perla who received an award for “his upholding of school values of respect and resilience” while being his team’s runner.
Water Confidence
In Week 5 Year 0/1 attended Northern Arena for 4x water confidence lessons. Northern Arena is renowned for delivering swimming lessons that teach the strength, ability, confidence and technique to be safer in the water, whilst having heaps of fun along the way.
The children were amazing! The confidence that grew over the week was incredible and it was great to see the varying abilities persevere to achieve their goals. We saw floating on our back/front, kicking using noodles and boards, arm strokes, blowing bubbles, diving down, and smiles all around! We also did an awesome job at managing ourselves when getting changed and taking responsibility for our belongings.
Ka pai Year 0/1, you are all superstars!
The children in Year 2 took part in the Water Safety Programme in Weeks 6 and 7. Swimming and water safety skills are so important when we live surrounded by water and many of our leisure activities involve water. The instructors at Northern Arena were amazing and the children learned a lot going everyday for two weeks. Our last lesson included Boat and Water Safety skills. The children learned how to wear a life jacket and some ocean survival techniques. We learned a lot and had fun too!
MIDDLE SCHOOL
Swimming and Water Safety LessonsDuring Week 8 and 9 Year 3 & 4 have been attending swimming and water safety lessons at Northern Arena. During this time we have learnt to self-manage by remembering to bring all my swimming equipment daily and getting changed by ourselves. We have been developing ourselves as a lifelong learner by taking a risk, persevering with our swimming and reflecting on our swimming and water safety skills. We have had so much fun and each session we had a big smile on our faces!!!
Creating Habitat Tri-amas for Scientific Art
This term our team have been learning about Habitats and in particular New Zealand bush Habitats.
The children were challenged with a task to create a tri-ama habitat for an animal of their choosing. Their habitat had to include the four essential elements to survive shelter, space, water, and food. They then used clay to model their animal to sit proudly within their habitat creation. They look amazing and the children are very proud of their success.
SENIOR SCHOOL
Ki o Rahi
In the lead up to Matariki, Year 5/6 have been learning to play Ki o Rahi. Supported by Kelly Sports coaches, our Ki o Rahi P.E. sessions have been a fantastic addition to our physical education program, introducing Year 5/6 tamariki to this traditional Maori game that combines elements of rugby, tag, and strategy. The students quickly embraced the rules and tactics, showing great teamwork, agility, and enthusiasm. Ki o Rahi has certainly been a favourite activity this term and next we want to start a class vs class tournament!
Term 2 Genius Hour
This term, Year 5/6 students opted into their second round of ‘Genius Hour’. See below the fun focus areas we had:
Sport: Students enjoyed getting extra physical education into their week and doing different games and activities to what they usually do.
Rockets: Students who opted into the Rocket lessons learned a little about Forces and experimented with variables before moving on to create rockets. In small groups, students designed, created, and launched water rockets. Launching was a lot of fun, and we saw one rocket reach 28m in distance.
Coding: This group have had an exciting Genius Hour, diving into coding with Code.org. They started with the basics, creating 'Hello World' programs, and quickly moved on to programming Dance Parties and designing their own Minecraft games. Through these activities, they have become skilled in block coding, showcasing their creativity and problem-solving abilities.
Art: Our art focus this term was on creating our own graffiti style name and painting this onto a ‘fence’. We learnt about the history of graffiti, how the movement has changed to a form of artistic street art and practised different styles of lettering, symbols and designs. Individually, we all constructed our own 'fence' and painted our final graffiti name onto it before mounting onto painted blocks. The whole process was so much fun!
Chess: It's been great to see such enthusiasm for chess this term from students who were just learning to move each piece through to confident players with excellent tactical understanding. The students could play either OTB (over the board) or online against each other which allowed a dozen or more games to play concurrently. Well done to all the students for their sportsmanship and desire to improve.
Music: In music, students have been focussing on beat and rhythm. We have loved using boomwhackers to pop songs and creating our own tunes on xylophones.

If you need to collect an unwell child, you are most welcome to come down close to the office for pick up.
Thank you for your understanding.
