SPORTS TALK
AFL
Years 3-6 students have been lucky to have coaches from AFLNZ come to school to teach us AFL rules and skills. It’s always great to learn new physical education skills and make connections about what we can apply to other sports we play.
Below is an extra from a Year 5/6 class:
*In our first session we did a few warm up games and learnt how to do a hand pass in AFL. A helpful tip from the coach was to do the 'pirate dance' so we could feel the movement with our arms before contacting the ball.
*In our second session, we learnt an AFL drop punt. The demonstration included great tips such as holding the ball with 'laces away from faces' and holding your hands on the ball in an 'M' like McDonald’s'. We then practised two ball-catching techniques, either a 'digger scoop' or a 'W'. We had a lot of fun, especially when we were allowed to have a drop punt competition at the coaches and Mrs Hansen joined in too.
*During our last session, we revised our skills and then learnt how to run and correctly hand pass while on the move. In addition, we practised running while pausing to drop punt. This was tricky! The AFL balls are light and it was easy to over kick.
We then applied all our skills to a mini game and it was so much fun, especially trying to drop punt to a teammate to score in the goal area.

Cross Country
On 22nd May, we held our annual cross country at Te Haruhi Bay, Shakespear Park. It was a beautiful sunny day filled with energy and enthusiasm. Students from every year level participated, showing great determination and sportsmanship as they ran their course. Cheers and encouragement from teachers, parents, and fellow students filled the air, making the event even more special. Each student gave their best effort, and many achieved personal milestones. After the races, there were some very tired children but it was great to see RICH hearts on display as they continued to support others. It was a fantastic day that highlighted Red Beach Schools commitment to fitness and fun.
